How about something by Beverly Naidoo? Chain of Fire, Journey to Jo'burg, or the short story collection Out of Bounds?

Hi everyone,
I have a Social Studies teacher looking into replacing the book he typically uses in our South African Apartheid unit, Kaffir Boy, with something maybe shorter/high interest/more approachable for today's readers. Do you know of any good South Africa or apartheid books?
His words.
Any suggestions from the amazing brains of you librarians would be amazing!
Thanks in advance!
