[CASL-L] Weeded books

Very well said, Ann.  Thank you.

As Sarah suggested, books that are being weeded for space might be appropriate.  However, any materials should be checked before donating or sending.  The African Studies Center at Boston University has an excellent outreach program.  The experts there can advise on the suitability of any materials.  I have included a link below.
I would suggest seeking advice from appropriate experts in assessing any books intended for donations to any other students as well.

Hi all,I don't want to be a jerk here, but this is a really important topic. I spent a few months in rural Tanzania in 2018 setting up a library in a region that had no library access or internet access at all.  We were dealing with all donated materials.  I can't stress this point enough- if the books are not good enough- for WHATEVER reason- for your students, they are not good enough for the African students (or any students, for that matter). Those students lead rich and full lives.  They do not need misinformation, dated information, or fiction they can't connect to. In addition, the east African countries I visited do not have a waste management or recycling system.  They have no way to dispose of materials that are unsuitable, short of burning them. Please consider recycling your books if your district doesn't allow for straight disposal.  If there is someone from Africa on here, I defer to you obviously, but I wanted to share my experience.

If the books are in decent shape, American Friends of Kenya will take them.

They don't take everything, but whatever they take will end up in one of over 20 libraries they support in Kenya.

I started a massive weeding project last school year. Our nonfiction section is both out-of-date and under-used (probably because it is out-of-date). There are MANY books that we no longer need and I have pulled out of the collection. The problem is I do not know what to do with all of the weeded material. I have left them out for students to take and sent emails to teachers to see if they want any for their classrooms. I still have A LOT left. What do you do with weeded books?
