HI Paula,
Welcome to the library!!
I have my policies on the website too. I also send home a note to
kindergarten parents stating their library day and general library
procedures. I also communicate through the school newsletter and tell each
grade as I have work with them.
We allow 2 books for K and 1, 3 books for 1-3, 4 books for 4 and 5 books
for 5-6. I am pretty flexible too. If a student forgot books, I put them
on hold and they can come during the day, usually before the first bell,
and return/check-out. For chronic late books, I will often work with the
teacher for the student to check books out and leave them in their
classrooms. After 60 days I mark the books lost and let them start
checking out again. I continue to ask for books to be returned and/or paid
for. However, we have a "pay if you want" policy, so I try until the end
of the year and then forgive the fines.
For books that are ruined, I try to fix as much as possible and if it's
beyond repair, I will reach out to the parents. If I can recover money I
will replace the book. If not, our policy is forgiveness. I do talk to
the students about it throughout the process about book care, etc.
My goal is for all students to check books out and be a part of the
library. For the younger primary grades, it really is a parent issue.
Teachers send out reminders weekly about library day and returning books.
I can't do it without them.
If you need any other help just reach out!
