[CASL-L] AI Detectors

Hi!

Caution your teachers to be careful with AI detectors themselves. They are notorious for false positives. Their biased against multilingual learners or other students who use Grammarly to support their expressive communication. 

The teachers at my school use turnitin.com’s AI detector. I have warned them that it gives a lot of false positives so they have said that they use it only as an extra piece of evidence if they suspect malpractice.

I’m trying to work with my district to enable Brisk. It uses the version history to create a video showing the entire work process of the doc. It lets you see, for example, if large chunks of text are pasted into the document. 

Your teachers should not use things like GPTZero because they are not compliant with Connecticut data privacy. By entering students’ work, the company can use it for their model’s learning, and it’s actually an issue of student intellectual property. 

I’m happy to share a ton of information about AI in education in general. I am part of my district’s AI committee, ISTE’s AI community of practice, and I am working on research tied to it as part of my Ed. D.
