Ann,
I am so glad you asked this question. I have had students using Google
Earth and Google My Maps for years.
They've created wonderful projects using both. They've done projects on
historical events, science, history of their communities, art, literature,
and more. If you have discovered any ways students can still use Google
Earth, I would like to also know.
1) Google Earth has been removed by many NYS school districts.
2) Google "My Maps" is still in Google Workspace, and students can use that
for projects.
For years, i have posted a website FOR FREE, that showcases work students
and teachers have done using both Google Earth and My Maps.
The site has had over 179,000 visitors from around the World. Students have
a chance to have an authentic audience for their projects. And, teachers
can post lessons they've created, for other teachers to replicate.
Feel free to access this website. It's called, "Google Historical Voyages
and Events <https://sites.google.com/view/historicalvoyages/home?pli=1>."
1) Feel free to access and use any of the projects
2) If you have any student projects or teacher/librarian lessons you'd like
to submit, please contact me. It's FREE
3) I host the site, and the focus is publishing student work and teachers'
lessons.
4) There's one on *My Brother Sam Is Dead
<https://sites.google.com/view/historicalvoyages/historical-literature/my-brother-sam-is-dead-american-revolution-mid-sch>,*
the
historical novel on the American Revolution. It's done in Google Earth, and
you or your teachers can use it. There are discussion questions written by
students for each chapter (All of the discussion questions were written by
7th graders, not the teacher); culminating activities, student reflection
essays, peer review questions for students to work with partners, primary
source documents, and more.
5) This one is on Paul Revere's ride
<https://sites.google.com/view/paulreveresride/home>; has lesson plan,
discussion questions, creating a slide presentation, extra credit
assignments, and more.
6) This one is by 5th graders in MA - on famous explorers; they used Google
Earth
<https://sites.google.com/view/historicalvoyages/famous-explorers-voyages/explorers-elem-mid-sch>,
drew their own pictures of the explorers, worked with the art teacher
7) This one is a middle school in Virginia; students studied explorers;
used Google Earth
<https://sites.google.com/view/historicalvoyages/famous-explorers-voyages/explorers-mid-sch>
8) There is one project from a librarian in New Orleans. She had students
use My Maps after Hurricane Katrina, showing the rebuilding after the
hurricane.
9) This one is on "My Maps," on famous battles of the Civil War
<https://sites.google.com/view/historicalvoyages/historical-literature/my-brother-sam-is-dead-american-revolution-mid-sch>
Click around. You will see projects by students from grade 3 - 12th grade.
Please let me know if you have discovered ways for students to still use
Google Earth.
I assume your question is about it not being available for students.
And, please let me know if you have past projects you would like me to post
on the site. I'm happy to do so.
If you are using "My Maps," we can put those up too. My Maps is still part
of Google Workspace, which means it's included with the other tools such as
Docs, Forms, Slides, etc.
