Towards Inclusive Accessibility in Libraries (TIAL)
Understanding Web Accessibility and the Department of Justice's 2024 Title II Ruling
In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice issued new regulations on the accessibility of Web content and mobile apps that apply to state and local governments. The first implementation deadline is approaching in April 2027, so come and learn how these new rules will affect libraries in Connecticut. This series will consist of four workshops.

Web Accessibility Auditing Demonstration
Monday, October 26 | 10-11 am
Register: Web Accessibility Auditing Demonstration<https://cslib.libcal.com/event/17256396>
Join Geoff Freed of onfocusAccess for the third of four workshops on web accessibility and the Department of Justice's ruling on Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This demonstration will give participants an opportunity to learn how digital-accessibility professionals approach the manual evaluation of websites. Using a variety of digital properties, including those from Connecticut public libraries, onfocusAccess will implement a think-aloud process to lead participants through a variety of methods to search for, evaluate and in some cases remediate accessibility obstacles. Participants will learn how to build an organized approach to testing; how to track issues; how to choose the appropriate tools for testing; and the importance of maintenance testing after remediation. Participants will also learn how to prioritize the remediation of obstacles by understanding how these obstacles impact not just users with disabilities, but how accessible design makes digital materials easier to use for everyone.
Presenter:
Geoff Freed, Director, onfocusAccess Consulting. With 40 years of accessibility experience, Geoff Freed is a senior advisor to organizations working to ensure their digital experiences are usable by people with disabilities and are compliant with accessibility standards and regulations. Before turning to independent consulting, he spent five years as the director of digital accessibility consulting at Perkins Access, a division of Perkins School for the Blind. Prior to that, he helped lead digital accessibility efforts at the WGBH Educational Foundation and the National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) for 35 years, including 12 years as director of technology projects and Web media standards.
