I have 1 set from 2009 and got rid of 1 set from 2007 plus other misc sets.  We have Britannica online and Go that offer up to date information.  When I questioned having them, a librarian pointed out all that was missing from the sets.  For example, in 1999 there was no 9/11, no Barack Obama, etc.
The books are good for demo.  And I'm in the process of covering mine as well to divide my non-fiction section.

Good morning! I had 2 sets, 1996 and 1999.  I did the same as you, saved some for demo purposes. I also covered 10 with bright paper and labeled them with Dewey dividers-000s, 100s, etc and use them to show where each Dewey section begins. My district also has a go grolier subscription that I use. The encyclopedias from the 90s are out of date and most likely not going to give students much accurate information.

I have one set, also from 1999 I believe. I've only been in my school for a year, and have kept it but only took some books out to use as a demo when discussing an event in a young reader's book!
My district has a subscription to Go Grolier which I prefer as students can access it from home or school.

Hello All,

Just a question. I'm new to my school library. Current Encyclopedias on the shelves are from 1999. They have 4 sets, New Book of Knowledge, Comptons, World Book and Britannica. All 1999. I'm thinking we only need one set with an additional online database of some sort. But wondering what other school libraries do...how many different sets do you have? Or are you completely online for this now? I'm leaning towards just an online subscription. Any preferences..Britannica or World Book?

Thanks for the help!
