Outcasts United by Warren St. John - there's a young adult version and eighth graders could try the adult version if they wanted something more challenging but everyone would still be reading the same basic story.  You could also do that with the different versions of I Am Malala and Orphan Train.

Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate.  Our middle schools have done Outcasts United and Home of the Brave as school-wide reads.
