I also had a Skype with Paul and he was fantastic. Used the kids' names and held us spellbound for 30 minutes!

I contacted two schools he visited to get some feedback. This is the information I received:

  • In person visit:

    • We had Paul last March.  He spoke to the students about his books and his experience teaching in a prison school. Our students were engaged and many students had read his book, Black & White.  I had copies of Riker High available along with Black & White.

    • He was entertaining and was able to handle a large crowd.

    • I hosted him in the library and we ran 3-4 sessions of about 30-50 students.

    • Paul also did a writer's workshop with 5-7 students.  He requested the students sent their work to him ahead of time. These students really enjoyed their time with him. Since his books appeal to the reluctant readers, it was engaging for many of the students.

  • For a Skype visit:

    • I could not recommend him more highly. He is super engaging and keeps the session moving. Sometimes Skypes aren’t great because of the nature of them, but he kept the students interested and laughing the whole time. Great, great Skype author.

I've never done an author visit at the high school level. I'm discussing this with some reading teachers today. He does sound compelling.

Good morning everyone,
I received an email from the author Paul Volponi about visiting my school (or others) for a presentation/workshop.
While I would certainly be interested in having him come, I wanted to get some feedback from anyone who might have had him at your school.
What are his presentations/workshops like? Do they get the students involved as well as him speaking?
Also, besides this, one of my main concerns is the cost. I don't have the funding left in my library account, but could ask the PTSA to help support the visit. He did mention his willingness to work with schools on his fee for the day.
For those who have had him visit, would you be able to let me know a general idea of his honorarium so I can see if it's possible or not.
Thanks in advance.
Chris
