Number, Please! Dewey Decimal Classification

The Dewey Decimal (DDC) system is the most widely used library classification system in the world.  It is used by 95% of the public and school libraries in the U.S.  However, what started as a slim book in 1876, has grown to 4 volumes and can sometimes be confusing to navigate.  New catalogers and copy catalogers can learn more about Melvil Dewey, his revolutionary idea, and how to use it more effectively in this 3 hour workshop lead by Cataloging Consultant Dodie Gaudet.  Please bring a recent edition (22nd or 23rd unabridged; 13th or 14th abridged) of DDC and items that need classifying.

By the end of this class, you will:

·         Understand why Dewey created his classification system

·         Know how the system works

·         Be able to use the DDC more effectively to catalog library material
