Hi to my old colleague Michele!

Regarding your post on leveling your school library; although I'm the Director of Technology, I am also the supervisor of Branford School District's Library program. The topic of leveling came up when I arrived here 3 years ago, and we have fought to keep from leveling our libraries here. Since the purchase of Destiny is under my Technology budget, as our compromise to those wanting leveling I purchased Destiny add-ons for the ability to search by Lexile and also F & P level, in addition to the regular reading level/interest searching. For JanMarie, they also have the option to search by AR level. (see screenshot of the settings in the Back Office setup.)

Hope this is helpful--it was not a huge expense and this helps students find appropriate reading selections without singling them out if they read at a lower level.

Hi Michele,
There has been a lot of discussion of that in my building as well. I've fought not to had have the books labeled for the same concerns you've stated.  Especially with the way students tend to act toward one another where reading is concerned (in my building.)

To keep the teachers happy, I make sure that the Marc record has the lexile in it.  I have also kept a spreadsheet of books,  by call number, and have printed out versions handy for teachers and students who are looking within a particular range.  Destiny has a bibliography function that provides a tiny blurb of the book. This way they can see books that they're supposed to be leveled at, but also reach for higher levels.

Hope this helps!

Take care,

Michele –

We use the Accelerated Reading program here at Vinal Tech.  Thus, it has become imperative that I label books with their reading level, interest level, and point value.  Students are required to read in a certain zone dependent upon their testing results.  And, they are required to reach a certain number of points each marking period (this is done by taking quizzes on each book read).

Student access is somewhat limited due to AR but it has gotten a lot of kids reading.  I like to believe that some of them will become life-long readers – that should be objective of the program!  The biggest problem I have is finding enough books for the readers at the top.  Not a lot of interest is available that are AR.

Things are a bit different at the high school level than they are for a middle school.  Is your school considering using AR?  If so then we should talk.

Subject: [CASL-L] Leveling books in a middle school library

Good morning,

I was asked to discuss the possibility of leveling all of the books in the LMC. Using Fontas and Pinell. I am wondering if any other middle school has done this and the benefits of doing so. I have reservations about this as I do not want to limit access (or have a student perceived limited access) based on a level assigned to a book.

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

Can anyone recommend any free and easy to use apps or websites to create stop motion animations? We need something that works on Chromebooks, PCs and/or Samsung tablets.

Thank you
