This may not be relevant, but when I had primary students who came straight from China without any English, I gave them a camera. They captured things around the school, at lunch, at recess, etc. that they wanted to learn the words for. They took pictures of signs, posters, equipment, teachers, etc. They then made their own "dictionary" using tech with images and we helped with words.
