When I was a middle school LMS I had a student who never finished a book. He’d walk around with one book and renew it constantly but never finished because it didn’t hold his
interest. Then we got Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt. I handed it to him, told him to give it 50 pages, then come see me. He came back a few days later raving about it and said he couldn’t put it down. Try that if you have it. The protagonist is
middle school age but the story is amazing.
I second the recommendation of the Track series. Also:
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
The Emperor of Any Place by Tim Wynne-Jones

Subject: Re: [CASL-L] books for a high school boy
Hi Katie -
Some of my younger and/or reluctant reader high school boys still love the Rick Riordan books that they used to read in elementary and middle school, so I bought all of his series (the original Percy Jackson titles and then the offshoots
like the Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, Heroes of Olympus). I'm also noticing that the freshmen and sophomores are just a little young to have been part of the whole Harry Potter craze so that series is new to them.
I still get a bunch of boys liking the Mike Lupica and Carl Deuker sports books. My reluctant readers still really like Lockdown: Escape From Furnace by Alexander Smith and Ashfall by Mike Mullin.

I have a sophomore who struggles to find books he enjoys. I’ve tried offering him a wide variety of titles and genres (including some of my usual reluctant reader go-to regular
novels, graphic novels, hi-lows, etc.). He expressed frustration recently and told me he just wants to like a book again like he did when he was little
L, which kind of broke my heart—he mentioned fond memories of reading Magic Treehouse and the Lunch Lady series. I’m going to order a few Wimpy Kids, which I personally love but don’t currently have in my collection.
Any ideas for other titles or series I could try with him?
Thanks!
