We have had a number of very successful author visits over the past few years.  All cost in the $1100-1500 range plus hotel cost.
Steve Swinburne - Vermont  Primarily non fiction (all ages) but some picture books.  Science based and he plays the ukulele
Lita Judge -  New Hampshire  Fiction and nonfiction (all ages); excellent, engaging presentations on lots of different topics.
Marty Kelley - New Hampshire  Great presenter, very engaging, very funny kept all the kids (K-4) engaged
Melissa Stewart - Massachusetts Excellent science books.  Low key but LOTS of information and involvement (readers theater)
Elise Broach - Connecticut Primarily chapter books with a few picture books  Very interesting

I consider Steve, Lita, and Marty personal friends so please let them know I recommended them for a school visit.

Hope that helps!

We have had some amazing authors come and visit our school recently. Very reasonable.

Shelley Gill- lives in Alaska, but paid air fair (we paid hotel for the night) and she was $1400. She is a visit that everyone at my school still talks about. Very engaging!

Elise Broach- lives in CT- has The Miniature World of Marvin and James series and picture books. All my K-2 loves Marvin and James. $1600 for three 50-minute presentations and a book-signing, with no more than 4 1/2 hours at the school

Sarah Albee- lives in CT (worked on Sesame Street and did a great job with K-2 crowd. Has lots of non-fiction books) $1500 but does multiple school discount.

Not sure of the current cost, but I highly recommend Mike Curato. He lives in the Northampton, MA area so you wouldn't have to pay for any travel extras and he was fabulous! We hosted him for K-2 in Dec. 2017 and kids are still talking about him a year later. A student was just talking about his visit today. Because he is an illustrator and author, he does a nice drawing session where the students are his art directors. His books are diverse and he was excellent at presenting to a younger crowd. The adults and kids all really enjoyed his presentation.

He books through this website now https://theauthorvillage.com/
