• I have been asked about the projects. So, here it goes. I am extremely lucky to have a staff member Beth Berstein who takes the lead on craft projects in our school in which we piggyback off of utilizing some of her ideas.  For the book projects, we supplied the materials, the space, assisted with researching info, and doing some of the prep work like cutting, etc... Beth has mad skills. After her initial book artwork, she went on to create more advanced work with "cut and fold" techniques (see pic). FYI, book artwork can be daunting. You have to select books with the correct number of pages, precisely measure each page and mark them, then fold page by page. Basically, the only students who partook in creating book artwork were students who love to craft that also worked closely with Beth to complete the task. It can be relaxing when you get in the groove, but it takes a commitment. The pencil tops, on the other hand, were super easy. That being said, there are special scissors that make the task go much more quickly. Here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/RSVP-Blade-Scissors-Protective-SNIP/dp/B000TYKWMI. The chain of flowers is also easy as long as you have precut strips to make available for students. Then you just make the loops before assembling them. The one Beth made in the pic is an exemplar as she is masterful at all she does!!! Also, every year Beth sets up a series of craft tasks as part of our school's Health and Wellness Fair where students can stop by the table and let their creativity flow. We are very fortunate to have Beth at our school! Finally, just like we have a small group of dedicated student puzzlers and chess players, we have a small group of dedicated students who like to craft and will work on projects. However, the majority of activities we have set up that have been successful have been rolled out via a club. Hope that helps.
Cut and Fold" example from the WWW to illustrate the point made above.

I second using them for Makerspace projects (see pics - one is shown with magazines but certain books have worked). I also let the classroom teachers take discarded books. Lastly, I do donate books that are salvageable to public libraries for book sales.

Hello Nicole!

One way I use weeded books is for makerspace projects--one of my beliefs is that if a book is non-fiction and outdated, or old and worn out, it should just be recycled in some way--not sent to another school or country.

Also, I keep the titles that may still be of interest and let classroom teachers look through them to see if there are any they want to add to their classroom libraries!  Lastly, I keep high interest titles to put out for the book swap I organize:)

Hope this helps!

Hello CASL!

I am hoping you can assist.  I am in the process of weeding my nonfiction collection.  Our district is wondering what others do with their weeded books.  If you recycle/donate what organization(s) do you work with?

Thank you!
Nicole
