I have an "Underground Book Club" going on in my Upper School. I started it at the beginning of the year. It's not something that is ever formally announced; rather, it's a club that gets offered to advisors. If an advisor chooses to be a part of it, then we check a book out to the advisor and everyone in the advisory. Students either choose to be a part of the Underground Book Club or he/she immediately returns the book. A student created a special "Underground Bookmark" for this program too. We slapped a barcode on that bookmark and that's how we check books out to students. We have a Google Classroom that everyone who joins is a part of, so we can see who's already read the book and who's currently reading it.

It's a fun program, created because the typical book club we did several years ago just didn't work with Rumsey's jam-packed schedule. (We also run a huge book club program where usually around 35 different clubs happen on campus at the same time just once a year.)

For this year's Underground Book Club, I have 20 books that will be in fairly good shape at the end of the year that I'd like to donate. I figured I'd ask MLSC if they wanted them. The book jackets will be in pristine shape, since we removed them to make the books even more "Undergroundish!" This year's book is Alex London's Black Wings Beating, everyone has loved it so far except for one adult that I know of.

Happy reading,
~Val

Don't forget the Middletown Library Service Center!  Grace Burchard is so kind and, like the state library, sends sets of books through the C-Car system (or whatever it's called now) so they arrive at my local library.  That said, I like the idea of a shared document so we can share book sets that we have purchased!

Hurray for high school book clubs!  Also for the choice of The Goodbye Days.  Jeff Zentner is a treasure; his new book is coming out very, very soon.  I retired in June and I still miss my book club kids.  I second the recommendation for the state's collection (though fyi, Linda Williams will be retiring).  Since my club kids valued getting to keep their books, I also recommend bookoutlet.com for deep discounts.  The books are "remainders," so you won't see the newest titles, but the selection is great and it's easy to get multiple copies for amazing prices (about $4 for an $18 dollar hardcover).  If you use more traditional book sources, I also recommend writing a Donorschoose grant to fund the purchase; donors love to hear that there really are teens who want to read.

Hi Kathleen,
I just borrowed two sets of books from the CT Library System.  They delivered them to the public library in town, and I just have to swing by and pick them up.  They have many sets and titles, and Linda Williams could not be more helpful.  Linda.Williams@ct.gov
It's convenient and free!  I hope that helps.
Best,
Cheryl

Hello!  My students have started a book club recently, they wanted to read current YA novels. I purchased 6 copies of the book Goodbye Days.  I didn't know if anyone one else had similar book clubs at their schools and if anyone would be interested in maybe swapping books so I do not have to keep buying multiple copies. I could start a spreadsheet we could all add to and then just ship to each other, just do not know how we would handle shipping fees. I am just spitballing here so feel free to share any ideas or suggestions!

THANK YOU!
