The Connecticut Storytelling Center in residence at Connecticut College, New London celebrates its 38th Annual Storytelling Festival & Conference April 26-27th at the College Center in Crozier Williams. You’ll be so happy you came! |
The Friday/Saturday event (and informal story swapping on Sunday morning at the Groton Inn and Suites) offers you professional storytelling concerts, workshops on storytelling art and technique, and this year, we’ve added a panel of experts who will help us understand the value of storytelling as an antidote to screen time. It promises to be compelling! The plans for this festival have been in the works since we smiled our way out of the last one, and everything is set for an uplifting, thought-provoking and entertaining weekend! |
Teachers, this year’s panel on storytelling verses screen time will be a lively discussion, fielded by artists, educators and storytellers. Come with questions, ideas and an open mind. You may just leave with new insights into your students and transforming ideas for your classroom! Take a peek all of the Saturday workshops https://connstorycenter.org/festival.htm |
Healthcare Workers, learn about the powerful use of story in the field of healthcare. Dan Yashinsky, Canadian storyteller, will give us a whole new look at the healing power of story as he shares his experience with “Storycare,” an approach to healthcare that he co-developed. Folk Enthusiasts, all four of this year’s featured storytellers have roots in folk music or storytelling, from Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti's Living History presentation featuring Zora Neal Hurston, to Adam Booth’s stories and music of past and present Appalachia, to headliner Kim Weitkamp, winner of the Blue Ridge Excellence in the Arts Award. Come find the “folk” in our focus this year! https://connstorycenter.org/festival.htm |
Come (all) For The Entertainment Come hear for yourself why critics say that headliner, Kim Weitkamp, “is a master at seamlessly building bridges from story, to song, to story. Like all good storytellers she evokes both laughter and tears, but her impeccable timing, and dead-on anticipation of her listeners’ needs place her at the pinnacle of her craft. Then, she pulls her guitar out and you think, where did that come from, that milk and honey voice?” http://www.kimweitkamp.com |
| You can enjoy Kim in concert, and learn more about the craft in her workshop on Saturday. |
Regional and National Professionals This year’s storytellers will make you laugh and cry and inspire you to share your own stories! More details will follow in future e-blasts, but here’s a quick “Who’s Who”: |
Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, an international Toastmaster winner, will take you back in time with her riveting performance of Zora Neale Hurston. For twenty years, Gwendolyn has given voice to the struggles and triumphs of the women she portrays. Come see what the buzz is about! |
Adam Booth has been featured at national and international festivals, and will share his heart-warming and sometimes heart-breaking account of “Ashton,” from the Appalachian 20th Century: 1920’s, who chases her dream to bring her mountain songs to the world. |
Dan Yashinsky is a well-known Canadian storyteller, author, and community organizer, who will introduce us to the wonders of “Storycare” and its use in the medical field. |
And a cast of beloved Connecticut storytellers (and a few from Massachusetts) will honor Ro Hinman for her contribution to storytelling over the years. |
