Dear Lisa,

I'm sure there are some wonderful programs out there for this type of activity. I know some teachers use Epic in my school, for example. During my Library & Information Literacy (LIL) classes (K-3, especially), though, I prefer to enjoy stories together using a document camera. That's precious time that we have. I, personally, have moved away from individual screen time on our iPads and spend much more time enjoying stories that tie into the curriculum together as a class. Make sense? Maybe this is a good topic for the CASL Un-Conference coming up? One of my favorite PD reads of last summer was Mandy Ellis' Lead with Literacy: A Pirate's Guide to Developing a Culture of Readers. At this point, I'm thinking that doing everything we (librarians) can do as possible to "develop a culture of readers" is essential.

Best,
~Valerie

Hi,
I’ve recently been asked to consider integrating an online reading program into my K-3 library classes.  The idea is to have students practice reading independently at their level with each student wearing headphones.  Currently in my classes, students are encouraged to work in pairs or small groups when reading, researching or coding.  Looking for feedback from anyone who has experienced using an online program during class to foster independent reading growth or simply thoughts on using this type of program during library class.

Thanks!
