My circulation of fiction runs around 400 books checked out per month.
I work closely with our English department for their choice book units, which for the freshmen occur once a quarter.  Example of some of the Student choice units has been
memoirs, World War II, limited choice with book groups and teenage protagonist to go with a research unit about the teen experience.  I pull the books and we do a speed dating
activity with the classes.  During the speed dating time, I book talk some on the ones I have read and try to make recommendations to individual students who are having trouble finding their book.
After the activities, the students give their teachers their 1st and 2nd choices. I work hard to make sure most students get their first choice. We are a school of 1300 students and I have a healthy
book budget to be able to support the English department.

I work in an independent school. We have about 800 students in grades 9-12. My circ stats are abysmal. As of today there are 140 circs in fiction for the entire year. Our English teachers do assign outside reading but very few students borrow books. Most of our students buy books that they are going to read. Next year I will meet with the English department and remind them to suggest that the students borrow books from our library for their independent read.  Our fiction section is very up to date. I buy most of the well reviewed YA and adult books and I have a very good budget.
Earlier in the year, I posted a question about this topic on the independent school list serv that I am on and there was a lot of commiseration. A lot of teens just don't read. On a related note, my magazines go unread. I can probably count the number of times on one hand that I have seen a student pick up a magazine. I keep cutting the numbers every year.

Subject: [CASL-L] Requesting Print, Fiction Circulation Stats, HS

Hi All!

I have an inquisitive, curious building admin who would like to know what print, fiction circulation numbers are like at high school libraries similar to our school's enrollment (approx. 1,400 students) and in our geographic area (Farmington Valley, Hartford County).

For context, we've circulated about 500 fiction titles in print to students and staff this year (2018-19). This is about the same number of similar circulations as last school year (2017-18) for us. I think this admin wants to know if this is typical of other high schools like ours, in order to gauge the level of student interest in reading through this medium.

If you have the available time and will to generate these stats (2017-18 compared to 2018-19 would suffice), and don't mind sharing them with me to share with my curious admin, I'd be very grateful. Thanks for your consideration, and thanks for all you do!

Best,
