I work in an independent school. We have about 800 students in grades 9-12. My circ stats are abysmal. As of today there are 140 circs in fiction for the entire year. Our English teachers do assign outside reading but very few students borrow books. Most of our students buy books that they are going to read. Next year I will meet with the English department and remind them to suggest that the students borrow books from our library for their independent read.  Our fiction section is very up to date. I buy most of the well reviewed YA and adult books and I have a very good budget.

Earlier in the year, I posted a question about this topic on the independent school list serv that I am on and there was a lot of commiseration. A lot of teens just don't read. On a related note, my magazines go unread. I can probably count the number of times on one hand that I have seen a student pick up a magazine. I keep cutting the numbers every year.
