Job Announcement: Librarian I (Youth & Family Learning)

The Russell Library (Middletown, CT) seeks a creative, innovative, and outwardly-focused individual to help elevate our children’s and teen programs and services to ‘exceptional.’ The ideal candidate will have demonstrated proficiency with current and emerging online platforms, the ability to guide families and children in the use of personal devices and applications, experience in building community partnerships and conducting successful outreach, and impeccable customer service skills.

 

Middletown is a vibrant, growing and extremely diverse community of nearly 48,000 residents, located on the Connecticut River, in the center of the Nutmeg State. Home to two colleges and universities, a thriving downtown, a rich cultural and dining scene, and a unique combination of urban, suburban and rural life, Middletown has something to offer everyone. Founded in 1875, the Russell Library is a 501(c)3 organization that serves as the principal public library for the City of Middletown, with a full range of services aimed at 21st-century users. The Library Board of Trustees and library staff are currently engaged in a strategic planning process to set a course for success in community transformation in the coming years.

 

Regular responsibilities include planning and implementing youth programs and services, providing reference and reader’s advisory, assisting patrons in accessing library resources, selecting and maintaining assigned collection(s), and developing strong community partnerships and relationships, particularly with Middletown schools. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm working with youth and young adults as well as an understanding of current and emerging trends in services to ages 0-20. They must possess strong technology skills, demonstrate commitment to continually refreshing that skill set, and possess the ability to teach digital and information literacy to young people and their caregivers.  Social media and media production skills are desirable.

 

Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library Science or a comparable relevant graduate degree and some working or internship experience in a library or other intensive customer service environment. 35 hours per week; some evenings and weekends required. Union.
