Spring 2020 Courses

LIB K104 – Introduction to Reference Services (3 credits)                (Required)

Introduction to Reference Services Online is designed to familiarize students with the use of general and specialized reference procedures, services, and resources for public, school, and academic libraries.  Online instruction and activities will teach students how to conduct effective reference interviews, analyze patrons’ requests, and find subject information in both digital and print materials.   Students will identify, locate, and evaluate the quality, currency, and authority of a wide variety of reference sources.   This course also covers special topics in reference services including reader’s advisory, genealogy, health, and youth services.

LIB K123 – Introduction to Technical Services (3 credits)                (Required)

Introduction to Technical Services is designed to provide students with an understanding of the use of bibliographic tools, the skills to use them appropriately, and a basic knowledge of the workflow in a library technical services department.  Students will also learn important strategies used in libraries to manage print and media collections.  .

 

LIB K120 – Literature for Children (3 credits)                                     (Elective)

A critical study of literature for children and young adults, this course is designed to introduce students to the basic elements of bringing readers and literature together. Included are literary forms such as folklore, poetry, fiction, drama, and nonfiction. Students will learn about quality titles, authors and illustrators, as well as publishing of literature in print, media, and e-book formats.  Library programming for children and YAs will be explored.  Stages of childhood and adolescent development, best internet sites for youth, rules for safe navigation, legal and policy issues, including the rights of minors, regarding youth services in libraries, the value of cooperating with schools and other organizations, are all topics that will be studied.

 

LIB K202 – Field Placement (90-hr. Internship) (3 credits)                 (Elective)

This internship provides authentic work experience in a library or museum.
