Hi Elaine - For Fiction chapter books I have Realistic fiction, Fantasy/SciFi, Mystery, Suspense, Sports, Historical Fiction, Animals, Classics, Adventure, and Humor. Realistic fiction can be a catch-all, but I try really hard to decide which area would work best for my students.

Animals - I include Magic Kitten, Puppy Place, Humphrey books those types of things.

It really works well for my students.

Best,
Jenny

Dear Elementary Librarians,
If you have genrefied your fiction collection, what categories did you use?  I am mulling it over, and I already put classification stickers on books for these:
Mystery, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Humor, Multicultural, Adventure, Dogs, Horses, Scary.  But an awful lot of books don't fall into those.  Do you use Friendship? Realistic Fiction (which seems like a catch-all), Animals, other?  Thank you,
Elaine Shapiro
