procon.org is a good site to learn about current issues
I use http://www.kidsgoglobal.net/ as a “pre-search” activity to connect the students to a topic and fill in gaps in background knowledge.
I also have a resource list of picture books we use (attached)
From there we use NewsELA articles, Scholastic Go, and Explora through www.researchitct.org
These provide age appropriate materials for some pretty heavy topics.

Subject: [CASL-L] Research Project for 5th graders
Hi All!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
I was thinking of having my fifth graders choose a topic of research within the area of social issues, does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for resources to discuss this genre with them at this level?
Thanks in advance!
