Hi Tenley:

We have this issue regularly.  I am the Team Leader for the Capstone at East Haven High School.  I also teach several classes each year (as it's currently a half year course).  We have had adults not follow through and personality conflicts, etc.

I think we try to minimize this required component as much as possible.  The role of the mentor can be simply giving feedback or providing information instead of being a more focal part of the project.  Some students use family members or family friends as mentors.  Some students ask teachers to help them (I have a student planning a field day now with an elementary PE teacher).  We also allow students to communicate via telephone, Skype, and email.  This allows some flexibility for students who do not have transportation.

I hope that helps!

Hi,

I have some questions for those of you with a community mentor/service piece to your Capstone.

- What happens if a student is unable to get to their mentor/ community service time due to parents being unavailable?  We are anticipating that due to work schedules or other issues there might be students who have difficulty making it to their location after school hours.

- Have you ever had a mentor back out during the Capstone Experience or just had one that was not helpful, didn't fill out the paperwork, etc...?

I know that there are going to be students that don't want to do the work for whatever reason, and we can work the resources available at school to help get them through that.  We are trying to work on possible solutions for the students that are willing to complete the project, but don't have the needed support from the adults attached to it outside of school. Any suggestions or ideas to work around this would be much appreciated.

If there are any other roadblocks that you've had that I haven't thought of yet, I'd love to hear them, too!

Thanks for your help,
Tenley
