Thanks! I just found that too...... that those Google Meet links in Google Classroom are Nicknamed links, so students can't join before teacher.
Our teachers are working with small groups and didn't want Group 2 to come into Meet while Group 1 is finishing up, so they will be creating Nicknamed Meets for each small group.

Everything is changing so fast!
Great to have a collective brain out there,
Be Well,
Sharon

Hello,

Google did resolve this Meet issue. The link that you can create right in Google Classroom is permanent, posted prominently in the class banner, and safe. I told my teachers to always remember to leave their Meet last and to close the Meet tab.  The attached video shows how to do this. (A big thank you to my tech coordinator Pam Fowler!)

Please excuse the brevity of my responses or any typos due to my effort to make a quick response at this time. Thank you. Stay safe!

Subject: [CASL-L] Google Meet

HI all,

Our district is just getting started with Meet. Looking for the best way to schedule a Meet with elementary students so they cannot rejoin after the Meet has ended. So far, our only solution seems to be to Nickname the meeting, post it in Classroom just before it starts, have the teacher be the last one to leave, and delete the link from the Classroom Stream when the meeting is over.

Just wondering if anyone has any other words of advice for us?

Thank you!

Mary Lee

We're trying to work on the same thing.  This is what we have so far. Comments welcome.
  1. Students are blocked from joining a NICKNAMED Meet session before the teacher (meeting creator) joins the meeting. Once the final participant has left NICKNAMED meetings, students cannot join later without the teacher. The teacher should always be last to leave. The link/URL to the meet is deactivated within 5 minutes of the last person leaving the Meet and cannot be reused. NICKNAMES can be reused if you want. This will ensure that our virtual classrooms are monitored by a teacher just as our physical classrooms are.

    • This feature has started rolling out and should be available within 2-3 weeks.

    • Note that this option is (or will be) only available if you are using a NICKNAME for the Meet.

It will not work for meets scheduled as Calendar Events.  The NICKNAMED meeting should be created just before the meeting starts, but students can be told the nickname ahead of time.

    • To create a NICKNAMED Meet, go to meet.google.com and enter a meeting nickname in the 'Join or start a meeting' field. You can also find Google Meet in your GSuite apps under the 9 dots (Google App Launcher or waffle). NICKNAMES should be simple, but not too obvious.

    • Students will join by going to meet.google.com and entering NICKNAME for Meet.

    • Until this feature is available, you may want to let students know when a Meet will happen, but not post the link in Google Classroom until a stated time before the Meet.

      • Example to post in Google Classroom: We will have a Google Meet on Friday 4/24/20 at 10:30 am.  The Meet link will be posted that morning at 10:25 am.
