Hi, Kami can read pdfs with their text-to-speech function. So can Fluency Tutor for Google, which is by the TextHelp company that sells Read & Write. We pay for both but there are also free products that you can try. If you have to buy ithem, they are both well worth it and not that expensive. Both are Chrome extensions.

Subject: [CASL-L] Spine label question
I am wondering if anyone has a great spine label for fictional books that present students with the topic of prejudice and racism. I want the label to be a fast identifier if the book is on a shelf vs on display.  I will intend on using this label for an online collection too, so students searching online can see books with similar topics within.

Book titles to use as an example:
The Inside Battle by Melanie Sumrow.
The 57 Bus by Daskha Slater

Thanks for your ideas!

Subject: [CASL-L] DVD Regions

Hi Folks:

I’m looking to buy a “Region Free” dvd for a Spanish teacher.  Does anyone know if that will play on a Region 1 DVD player or in a disc drive of a computer?

Thanks,

Matt

Yes, yes. Now Mr Phipps, you do realize that the post of librarian carries with it certain very important responsibilities. I mean, there's the selection of books, the record library, and the art gallery. Now it seems to me that your greatest disadvantage is your lack of professional experience ... coupled with the fact that, uh, being a gorilla, you would tend to frighten people.

Subject: [CASL-L] Free tools for pdf readers
Good morning!  Happy Friday!
I have a special ed teacher who is looking for a way to make pdf into "read to me" texts.  Her students are in grades 2-4.  In order to assist with access to nonfiction texts for research, she was thinking she could create a pdf of the page in a book, add it to a slide, and use a tech tool to have it read to the student.  We are a google based school, so the extensions we are currently using [Read&Write] do not work for pdf or screen reading.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!!

Researchitct.org has this read aloud function available on many of their database resources. Perhaps she could find the content she needs there and then she'll already have the option to have it read aloud to the kids. Good Luck!

Best,

Keely Norton
