What about All American Boys?  From what I remember, it's lighter than The Hate U Give but still about racial injustice.

I love Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson. It IS a female main character though. Dear Martin by Nic Stone has a male main character. I agree that Long Way Down is an excellent choice. It is in verse. The brand new book by Randi Pink, Angel of Greenwood, is HF set in Greenwood OK. It has two voices – a boy and a girl. You may know Greenwood as Black Wall Street.
