Have you tried finding like titles in teachingbooks.net? You can have a free educator account. You won’t be able to see lots of their other resources, but I frequently find titles this way. There are links to diverse booklists.

I love Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson. It IS a female main character though. Dear Martin by Nic Stone has a male main character. I agree that Long Way Down is an excellent choice. It is in verse. The brand new book by Randi Pink, Angel of Greenwood, is HF set in Greenwood OK. It has two voices – a boy and a girl. You may know Greenwood as Black Wall Street.

Good luck!

Hi-

Our 8th grade English classes teach this book but some parents would like their kids to read something less mature. I have read a lot of books that would work, but most of the contain a female protagonist. I’d prefer a more gender neutral book. Something recent would be best. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Tanya
