Ditto to Doug's endorsement. Two of my students took part in a Random Hacks of Kindness, Jr program this past Saturday. They emailed me that night to tell me how much fun it was and how much they learned. They're both spreading the word to other classmates at Rumsey this week! One is a 6th grade girl; the other is a 4th grade boy.

Hi everyone -

I rarely post, in fact this might be a first for me on CASL-L. Just wanted to testify personally about these Random Hacks of Kindness, Jr. events - they have been great for my daughter who is 11 and has been doing them since she was about 9. They show the power of coding, its potential. I'm amazed at how she has grown from being a fairly passive participant to one who now gets in there right away, up to her elbows, and involves other participants who she was once like. There's a teamwork component, there's altruism, and she's always proud of whatever happened there. Patrice does a great job of herding all the cats into one general direction in a way that is considerate and productive.

Hi Barbara,

I was wondering if you could share the following flyer (and email) to your membership.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite your students to participate in Random Hacks of Kindness Junor’s  upcoming virtual hackathon scheduled for Saturday, March 13,, 2021 from 9 - 12 .  The three hour coding program will focus on designing and coding apps addressing gender equality in STEM.

Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science.

Join with Random Hacks of Kindness Junior as we design and code apps addressing girls' place in the STEM field. Together with mentors, participants will have the opportunity to create apps that highlight the importance of inspiring and engaging women and girls in science, technology, engineering and math.

Using Zoom, students will work in pairs with mentors to create prototype smartphone apps (using the online app block programming language, APP LAB from Code.org).

Pre-registration is required. The registration fee for the event is $10. Participants may register by going to RHoKJr’s website at https://rhokjr.org/event/hacking-for-gender-equality-in-stem/

For additional information feel free to drop me an email.
