Hi All,

Our school library was physically open to students from August-November for 3 services only: Chromebook repair, printing and Destiny hold request pickups/returns. During this time, there were only 3 cohorts of students, hybrid (2 days in-person, 2 days remote), full-distance and a small group of "full" in-person (4 days/week). Our two computers labs were available for classes to sign up and use with in-person students, but very few did this, or still do.

From December-February, we opened to all in-person students to use the library space in a limited capacity: reduced seating by 50% (to about 55 seats), social distancing markers and contact-tracing sheets placed on floors, tables and chairs, and encouraged students to alert staff members to assist them with borrowing materials as they browsed the shelves by themselves to avoid high-touch surfaces.

At the beginning of March, there was a two-week, staggered return of most of our students to 4-day, in-person learning. There are still hybrid and full-distance cohorts, but far fewer students are enrolled in these models. Our in-person visits have risen since the beginning of March to about 50-75 students per day.

We've maintained our virtual services since March 2020, and since the beginning of 2020-21, have had hand sanitizer and surface sanitizing stations setup throughout the library. Our custodial staff also comes in at the middle of each day to spray the library's tables and chairs with sanitizing mist.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck, and be well, all!

We have had 2 cohorts of students this school year, and we have been open for study hall all year.  We did have to remove half of our chairs to adequately space out students at tables throughout the Media Center in August, reducing our capacity to 42 patrons.  We have students scan a QR code that is linked to a Google Form for signing-in, as well as for contact tracing. We have sanitizing spray and paper towels available for students/classes to use before they leave.  We also have a number of hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the LMC. Our circulation desk area does have plexiglass installed.

Lori,
Norwalk High School was quite the opposite. The library is not opened to study hall students or to classes. My principal wanted to limit movement and gathering of students which would impact “effective” contact tracing. The library space is being used as a classroom in tbe upper library as we made every effort to space students/classes  out according to the guidelines. The lower library is used for students who might have come to school on the wrong day and lunchtime during inclement weather. A member of our maintenance staff is present and sits through all three lunch waves to clean. Students can individually come to the library to check out books. We have been like this since the start of school. About half of our students returned to school at the start of the year but progressively went remote. We may get 250 kids out of about 1600 a day. We are trying to entice students to return to school but I do not think it will happen until it is mandated.
I hope this helps.

We have been open since the start of our school year back in September!  No issues at all.  We had to reconfigure seating - but other than that, no changes.  Obviously we are seeing far fewer kids due to a large group choosing to stay 100% virtual.  Normally I would have 60-80 kids each period.  Now I'm lucky if I have 60 per day.  We are open for study halls, classes, and book browsing and check outs.  I even do curbside pickup and delivery if necessary for our virtual kids.

We have not been open to study halls or classes all year. We visit classes via Zoom for instruction. I teach two classes that meet in the library. Our other librarian teaches two classes that meet in the library. Very occasionally a SpEd teacher will bring a student in to sit at a table for testing or 1:1 work. No study halls, no lunchtime, no browsing. Students can reserve books and pick them up.

Our school has taken contact tracing very seriously so students are almost never in a location that they are not specifically assigned.

I'm following this thread closely and as we try to determine how things will change when/if the school opens 100%.

Hi everyone,

Library is a classroom, no loans, no student printer, I am a study hall proctor except for three periods that rotate over a three day cycle.

As Jen said, the school has strict contact prevention protocols in place.

I am open for about 20 students max to come in.  Seating is arranged appropriately.  I have held classes too, with all covid regs in place.  I used to have about 60 per period....now average about 11  :(  Can't wait to get back to normal!!!

I am 100% open, all day from 7:30-3:00 for students to come in and work conduct research, or check out books.

Our school has been in-person since September 4, with the exception of the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Other than eliminating printing and limiting capacity to 24 (about half of what I normally would get) it’s been like a normal school year.
