This fully online program for anyone who works in a library or is interested in a career in libraries can now be completed in one year or extended over a longer timeframe. 

Fall 2021 Courses 

LIB K101 – Introduction to Library Public Services   (3 credits) (required)  4 seats open 

This course is an introduction to library services in libraries of all types.  Students will learn about procedures such as circulation, reference, and interlibrary loan.  Other services such as public relations, programming, and displays are also discussed, as well as the importance of Intellectual Freedom and Censorship. The role of LSS in customer service is emphasized. 

 

LIB K116 – Cataloging and Classification (3 credits) (required)    10 seats open 

An introduction to the organization of libraries and the principles and practices of cataloging including descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, subject headings and classification systems. Copy cataloging, original creation of MARC 21 records, BIBFRAME and metadata, RDA elements, including FRBR (Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records) and FRAD (Functional Requirements of Authority Data) are taught with print and non-print materials. 

 

LIB K125 – Digital Media (3 credits)   5 seats open 

This course serves as an introduction to a variety of digital media forms used in the library and information service fields. Students will be exposed to such presentation software such as Facebook, Flickr, BitTorrent, Secondlife, podcasts, Mp3 and Mp4 files. Students will also use digital cameras and sound recorders to create original content. 

 

LIB K127 – Management Strategies, Communication, and Teamwork (3 credits)  13 seats open 

This course covers the basic supervisory skills that are necessary for library techni­cal assistants. Topics included are job descriptions, employee evaluation, mo­tivation, conflict management, interper­sonal communication, time management, teamwork, project management, training techniques, affirmative action, censorship, and fiscal management. 

 

LIB K202 – Field Placement (90-hr. Internship) (3 credits)  (elective) – Closed--Filled
