Our tenth grade teachers are considering Dread Nation by Justina Ireland.  We read it during book club, and the students loved it.  They are the ones who recommended it for the classroom.

Pride by Ibi Zoboi and Solo by Kwame Alexander might be good fits, too.

One of our English teachers also recommended Monster by Walter Dean Meyers.  It was part of the curriculum in another district she taught in.

Good Morning!

I am in search of some suggestions.  Our 10th grade English teachers are looking to add a YA novel to their classroom reading list. They want a minority character as the main character and a story that isn't focused on racial injustice.  I am creating a list of titles and wanted to see if anyone has a novel like this being taught by their teachers with success.

Thank you.

“The best way to measure how much you've grown isn't by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average-- though those things are important, to be sure. It's what you've done with your time, how you've chosen to spend your days, and whom you've touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.” - R.J. Palacio, Wonder
