A couple of thoughts:
Not a lot of details about the states, but in Around America to Win the Vote by Mara Rockliff, two suffragettes drive across the southern states from NY to California.
Grandma Gatewood Hikes the Appalachian Trail by Jennifer Thermes has some nice descriptions of the eastern states.
In the past I have used the fun fiction book, Lady Liberty's Holiday as a springboard for doing some research on the states.
Good luck!

HI.
I'm looking for a narrative nonfiction book about the regions of the US or cross-country travel for 4th grade.  We have nonfiction texts on the regions, but the teacher is looking for something with a story.

Thanks,
Laura
