I visit 9th grade classes on Fridays and read for 10-15 minutes either at the beginning or the end of class. I put on a zen-type nature video on the screen behind me and hand out sheets of paper to doodle on, but that's it. No screens or devices allowed and I encourage kids to take a "brain break" and just listen (or daydream). They're not responsible for any of this info, no need to take notes or remember. I read different books in different periods so they can check it out at the end of the reading if someone wants it and I don't get bored reading the same chapter seven times.

Casey,

Hi. I've been toying with this idea for my English classes. I'm curious about your logistics. When/how do you share with students? Do you visit classes? About how long has each one been taking (I'm sure there's a range)?

Hello all--

Is anyone else doing First Chapter Fridays in a high school? Looking for books with really good, enticing, fairly clean beginnings to read out loud to 9th graders! Would anyone want to collaborate and add suggestions to a Google Doc? I've been doing it since Sept with our freshmen and they LOVE it, so I've got a bunch that already worked, but I'd be happy to share!
