Thanks for all of these terrific ideas, Anne & Alyse. I read Isabel and Her Colores Go to School. It is in English and Spanish. This book does a wonderful job of connecting words and feelings with different colors. Since it's the beginning of school, students can relate to many of the feelings Isabel had and/or helps them work on empathy skills. On the second day of the lesson, I did an iPad activity using the DoodleBuddy app. It allows me to teach lots of iPad skills to my 1st graders and they have so much fun drawing objects and connecting them with feelings, while practicing tech skills.

Yes! The tissue is easy to cut and a simple design comes out quite nice, like a snowflake. You can also make templates with design ideas for the kids.

I LOVE the papel picado idea, Anne! Does it look like this? https://artfulparent.com/more-papel-picado-and-more-hearts/

I have been reading a variety of picture books/tales that demonstrate English and Spanish. They allow for great discussion of common tales they know. Good opportunities for comparing and contrasting settings, etc.
  • Rubia and the Three Osos
  • The Runaway Tortilla
  • Tortuga in Trouble
In K, I also read What can you do with a Paleta? I showed them a video of how paletas are made and images from a shop that makes them in CT. They also colored in their own paleta based on their favorite flavors/colors.

Hope these help!

I enjoy reading Dear Primo: A Letter to my Cousin by Duncan Tonatiuh with first graders and making papel picado out of tissue paper. They make beautiful decorations for the library.
