Hi Amy,

I have ordered hi-lo through School Library Journal with some luck. They have a few different sets you can order. I also find their customer service super helpful.

I work closely with our ELL teacher and she’s amazing!  One big thing to keep in mind is both representation, but topics that might be a trigger.  For example, we just previewed a great graphic novel but felt the refugee story was too intense for some of our students. We’ve done some author studies on Jason Reynolds and Elizabeth Acevedo with the ELL class.  They also read Hey Kiddo by Jarrett Kroscka a few years ago.  While your students may not have a designated teacher yet, finding authors that have a wide range of levels and formats with relatable topics helps. (Graphic novels, novels in verse, etc).

Sometimes we will buy books in a students home language or order audio books on Overdrive/Sora.  But the best success has been looking at the population of students and finding books that are accessible and interesting to them.

Good luck.

Subject: [CASL-L] Interesting titles for ELL high school students

Hello all,

We have a growing population of ELL students at my school and are in the process of hiring a full time teacher to help them out. My principal is looking to purchase a set of books that will interest high school students yet be easy enough for them to understand. She initially sent me this list:

sfpl.bibliocommons.com

Hi-Lo Picks for Adult Readers by SFPL_LauraL2 - a staff-created list : A hi-lo book is a title that is interesting to an adult or teen reader at a comparatively low reading level with simple vocabulary and syntax, short chapters, a slim page count, and gripping storylines. Hi-lo books are used to help struggling and/or reluctant readers strengthen decoding and comprehension skills, build confidence, and spark a love of reading. Hi-lo materials can be specifically designed and published as hi-lo or materials that fit into the high interest, low reading level criteria.

I looked through several of the titles. They are meant for high school/adult level, but the content may still be too mature for my principal's liking.

If anyone has a list they could share with me, I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you,

Amy Reilly
