Last year I did mine through the CASEL Framework (see below)...It was a little too squishy for me, so this year I am following Melissa Thom's lead and focusing on media literacy. Feel the need to get away from CRAPP and have a new system I'm comfortable teaching that includes lateral reading.

CASEL Framework

“RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING: The ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions across diverse situations. This includes the capacity to consider ethical standards and safety concerns, and to evaluate the benefits and consequences of various actions for personal, social, and collective well-being.”

  • Demonstrating Curiosity and Open-mindedness

SLO

Sedgwick students participate in Inquiry Projects throughout the year which includes a collaboration between the classroom teacher and the library media specialists. This year, in addition to information literacy skills, I will be working with students on developing the CASEL SEL skills of demonstrating curiosity and open-mindedness. I will teach strategies for wondering, questioning, and finding sources and information to satisfy their academic and personal curiosity. I will also teach students how to practice open-mindedness by having them explore their topics from multiple perspectives.

-Students will demonstrate personal and academic curiosity in all inquiry projects.

This will be measured throughout the year by formal and informal assessments.

-Students will demonstrate open-mindedness by looking at multiple perspectives during their inquiry.

This will be measured throughout the year by formal and informal assessments.

Hi Everyone,
I'm curious to hear from anyone who has an SLO this year with an SEL focus. I work at a middle school, grades 5 - 8, but I'd welcome ideas and thoughts from any age group! Particularly what kind of data are you tracking? In the past I've done things like evaluating online sources, and works cited pages, but I want to try something different this year.
Thanks in advance!
