Yes, in fact, I did. There are definitely high schools that have given away Kindles, Airpods, and B&N gift cards paid for with library funds. There are also schools that have given these types of items out after receiving them as a donation. I have been specifically told I can not under any circumstance purchase a giveaway using school funds, unless everyone who participates gets something, like a pencil. I can solicit donations, on my own, but I can’t buy anything except books or school supplies for prizes, and not any one item of “significant” value. I am so frustrated, since I literally gave this incentive last winter for our reading challenge.

Good morning!

I'm wondering what types of incentive prizes any of the secondary school librarians have been allowed to give away in the past.
Last year I was "allowed" to give away a Kindle Paperwhite as a prize for our Winter Reading Challenge, but now our district business office is pushing back that it is not an appropriate use of municipal funds.
Can anyone tell me if they have ever given away a "bigger-type" prize like this, paid with budgetary funds? It would help if I had examples to back up my case.

Thanks!!
Casey
