I have a number of standard metal bookends with foam bases (the protective underlining) and the foam has deteriorated over time, leaving lots of residue on my bookshelves.

I would like to remove that foam and replace it (possibly with cork?), as the bookends are in great shape other than the foam underlining.

Does anyone have any tips for:
1. effectively removing the foam underlining
2. what to use to replace it

Thank you!
