Great point Shannon. I have my grade 2's checking books out books themselves. I keep an eye on them, but they are pretty good at it, so that helps too!

I do allow my student volunteers to check students out, but I also have a self-checkout station if they don't want kids to see their info.

I train my student volunteers about the importance of privacy and instruct them not to ask personal questions. I don't even want them to tell kids they have overdue books. Just scan and stamp the date on the book.

I have wireless keypads, so kids come to the desk, type in their id, and the student volunteer just scans the book.

I had a few instances in the past where students at the desk remarked about a middle name. I had to rebuke them, but in 10 years I have never had any complaints higher up...I have worried about the privacy issue quite a lot. Sheer desperation when I don't have any help drove me to this choice. If kids are checking books out I can be in the stacks with other kids recommending books for them.

Does having volunteers checkout student library books violate a student's right to privacy? I am having a hard time finding a definitive answer.
