Technology is a mercurial concept, encompassing tools and skills that often rise to prominence and get replaced at very quick intervals. Since our global society is increasingly reliant on a variety of technologies, it is imperative that schools help students learn to navigate these constantly churning waters.
This month's One Lesson at a Time guest is Connecticut elementary school librarian Barbara Johnson, who has evolved an incredible project. Digital Learning Day engages students from across grade levels and gives them the chance to showcase their knowledge. Students choose a particular technology tool to investigate, then present that tool at an event that welcomes students, parents, and community members. Barbara provides details for an activity you can do with your students based on Digital Learning Day.
Giving students choice and voice in their learning is one of the most powerful methods in the educator's toolset: it bolsters students' sense of agency, not only engaging them in their learning but giving them ownership of that learning. Projects like Barbara's Digital Learning Day are examples of what education should look like.
Barbara is gearing up for this lesson right now, in preparation for a March event. As an added bonus, she has shared some resources that will let us actually see the final products of her students' work this year!
