I’m sorry to hear about the budget cuts.

Wethersfield only has 2 certified teacher librarians -at the high school (Nella Szilagyi) and middle school (me- Leslie Poulos).

It has been this way for a long time (I’ve been there for 16 years and it pre-dates me).

We have five elementary schools, and they are staffed by non-certified teacher librarians, all of whom now have college degrees (that was not necessarily true in the past). Their official title is library media technical associate (but some call themselves librarians). The last two hired in the last two years are certified teachers who left teaching -but they are not paid as teachers, they are in the secretarial/media union group. They have students and serve as a prep period for K-4 teachers- they are reading to students, checking out books, and handling all orders. The responsibilities and expectations seem to be increasing each year…

My high school colleague and I serve as informal department heads (unpaid) for the district. We do our best to try to train and support them as we can.

Yes, we do here in Newington . . . but only by the skin of our teeth. Last year, administration tried to eliminate a position through attrition. Long story short . . . we fought it (brought in parents to speak, etc.) and the BOE sided with us.
Good luck!

Dear CT Librarians,

We are experiencing budget cuts in Wallingford. A proposal has been made by our central office team to eliminate half of the school librarians at the elementary school level and split the positions between two schools. We are seeking information from other districts in our DRG. If you work in one of the following districts, or have definitive information, can you please email me to let me know if you have a full time school librarian in each school in your district? If not, what is the set-up? Thank you so much in advance for any assistance you can provide.

We are seeking information from the following districts:

Cromwell -

East Granby -
