We play Yes, Mrs. Rodko, No, Mrs. Rodko.
I pretend to be borrowing a book from the library. If I am being safe, kind, and responsible (our school motto) and taking care of the book the students say Yes, Mrs. Rodko.
If I'm not making good choices, they say No, Mrs. Rodko and raise their hands to help me make a better choice.
They love it and the Yes, Mrs. Rodko carries over the next few weeks as an unintended result!!!!
This helps me cover how to care for books, check out and return books and be safe in the library.

Happy new school year to all!

I love all these ideas!!! Thank you for sharing!

I do a lot of singing to start (welcome friends song, then name songs) to have fun and help me learn their names!

Jbrary is one of my favorite places to find songs!

I'm also a big fan of reading fun books with the "littles" to reinforce how joyful reading is!

Today I asked the kindergarteners if they had ever been to a library and at least 80% had so we didn't do too much talking about what a library is.  We read DO NOT BRING YOUR DRAGON TO THE LIBRARY (Gassman) and shared a few ideas about how we would keep our bodies safe.  (ie, no running and shouting because this is a classroom for learning, not a gym or a playground).  The other books I was going to read are THE COLOR MONSTER GOES TO SCHOOL and THE COLOR MONSTER and then have the kiddos draw a monster of their own!  I put out a pile of books for them on the table and on the floor and ask them to show me how to read a book and if they can show me that they can read it and turn pages carefully I would let them check out a book.  Yes, they all checked out one book today! 💗

There’s a really funny video of Cookie Monster going to the library for the first time in an old episode of Sesame Street. It is a great way to dive into what a library is and how to take care of books. Plus, who doesn’t love Cookie Monster?? 💕

I’ve also started the preschoolers and kindergartners off with a focus on loving to read and the idea that reading is magic. I’ve used Press Here by Herve Tullet and the students take turns following the directions in the book. The little ones have always really enjoyed this book. It’s a good way to learn their names, teach taking turns and following rules, and build excitement about books in general.

I hope everyone has a wonderful start to the school year!

Does anyone have a fun way of introducing the library to Kindergarteners?
I'm looking to shake it up from how I have done it in the past.
