This year we have 4 preschool classrooms. Last year we had 5. Students come with teachers for Storytime.
I tie the read aloud to their weekly theme.
Often we'll do a related fingerplay or song.
Sometimes we do an online activity on the Smartboard tied to the theme. For example, I'll use Topmarks for counting or numbers themes.
I have used our Beebots with them.
Sometimes we use props to retell a story.
Students borrow a book related to the theme if I have enough (or I just put a good read aloud to select).

Mostly, like others have said, it is about how to listen and interact with a story, take turns, take care of books, and learn about what types of books we like.

My school added Pre-K last year. Super bright side to look forward to the year after you have Pre-K: this year our kindergarteners already know how to use our library (reminders needed, of course) and they thoroughly enjoy listening to stories together!
