Hi CASL!  I’ve been writing this newsletter for the past year or so and sending it out on Conntech, the list serv for (mostly) public libraries.  I’ve (hopefully!) finally gotten myself subscribed to this listserv and will be sending you this newsletter as well.  I hope you find it helpful!  I always include links about what is going on at CLC this week, what is happening at the Capitol in Hartford and a roundup of all of the news about CT libraries in the last week.  I hope you like it!  Ellen

Good Morning CT Libraries, here’s what’s going on this week.

CLC HAPPENINGS

On Thursday, we have a coffee chat with the Employers Association of the Northeast on Managing with Empathy and Accountability.  What’s a coffee chat?  Allison Ebner, president of EANE will give a half hour presentation on management best practices and then we’ll have plenty of time for open discussion of current management challenges.  I highly recommend any manager sign up for this session. 

Also on Thursday is the Academic Library Tech Services Roundtable.

Preview for May 9th!  Have you ever wanted to see the inside of an Amazon Warehouse/Fulfillment Center?  Here’s your chance!  Space is very limited so register now!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

We’re in the home stretch.  Session ends on May 8^th.  Things have been quiet the last few weeks but could start to move quickly now that we’re getting to the end.  The House and Senate are both scheduled to convene several times this week.

eBooks: 

• By now, I hope, you know that there are two eBook bills in the CT General Assembly.
• The Planning and Development Committee bill is Senate Bill 148.  There was no action on this bill last week.
• The Government Administration and Elections Committee bill is House Bill 5312.  On Tuesday the House Bill was referred back to the Judiciary Committee.  They have a meeting today at 10AM.  The bill is on the agenda.  It’s possible that it’s passed out of Judiciary this morning and sent back to the House. 

School Librarians:

• HB 5417  was passed out of the education committee with substitute language. The substitute language is now available.  The bill has been reported out of committee and been assigned a house calendar number. 
• There was no action on this bill last week.

NEWS OF NOTE

I’m a little late on this one:  New Haven celebrates the Big Read on Channel 3

Gender Queer is returned to the shelves in Goshen… and then there was some confusing conversations about the Friends of the Library.

CT State Community College at Asnuntuck hosts drag story hour amid a small group of protestors.   The College beefed up security before the event.

Couple gets married at the Rowayton Library.  Sadly, no pictures inside the library.

Things they don’t teach you in library school:  Brookfield completes $28,000 in septic system repairs…

Michael Morand, Director of Community Engagement at Yale’s Beineke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, named New Haven’s official city historian.
