Hi Val,

Wanted to check in and see how Summer’s going. Hope you’ve been enjoying ‘vacation’!

Wanted to let you know that an author friend of mine is giving away free books to teachers and librarians, so be sure to check this out and tell those who may be interested: https://x.com/gracikim/status/1818992949876961742

Also, if your school would be interested in visits in the fall or spring, I’m beginning to work out my 2024/2025 schedule and would love to start the conversation! Same goes for any other librarians you know/might be interested in going in on a discounted group visit situation :)

Yes, the weather difference is a bit of a shock indeed!

And I’m so glad you enjoyed Shad’s story. It’s funny that you’re familiar with figs, the superior fruit. You’re right that you won’t find very good ones in CT. Too cold! However, I’m glad you’re a lover of plants like my vegan self. Right on!!

Ah, enjoy the warmth of Arizona! I left 80 degree weather of Florida to return to 30 degree weather in Connecticut. It was just snowing like crazy!

Oh, I read Shad bk 1 while on vacation and enjoyed it very much! I'll be recommending it to students. One of my favorite fruits is figs. My grandfather always had a fig tree and I couldn't wait for them every year. Now, my dad has fig trees, but their figs often fall off before they're ripe. I don't think the soil/weather is quite right in northern CT. In any case, I chuckled each time one of the bad characters was called a "fig." I also went to my naturopath today and very much believe in the power of plants to heal and keep balance within our bodies.

How fun! Hope you had a good vacation. We’ve been in Arizona, though I’m still sad I can’t come and enjoy dumplings!

I’m so glad to hear you’re working with Huda now. How cool to have your students get a video with a National Award finalist! That makes you librarian of the year.

Looking forward to hearing more about CASL, and thank you for the kind words. It’s wonderful that you've experienced this new culture and religious tradition! Very cool!

Dear George,

I was on vacation in FL with just my phone for tech for the past week. I had an email started to you and never hit send. Here's what it said:
"Enjoy your vacation, George! I'll be in touch about school visits at Rumsey and beyond.

CT Association of School Librarians"

In the meantime, you've emailed me today! I'll do my shopping for the dumplings tomorrow and do some prep work on Thursday. Bulk of the work will happen on Friday.

Regarding the CASL conference, we'll send out invitations to authors for authorpalooza within the next month. We're all volunteers so sometimes we don't respond as quickly as we should. No worries, you'll absolutely be invited to our CASL Conference!

Thanks again for reaching out to Huda for Clayton (book club leader) and me. She is going to put together a short video for Clayton to share with his members. Super exciting!

I hope you're having a special Ramadan. I "experienced" it a bit with a couple of students during the previous two years. Rumsey sponsored two girls from Afghanistan. I was fortunate to be one of their advisors. They graduated from Rumsey last June and are now at a secondary school in Vermont. I wish I knew you back when they were at Rumsey. They came to my house for Iftar.

Kind regards,

Hi Val!

Was looking at photos from NerdCamp and thought of you. Hope preparations for what sounds like a fun get-together are going well!

Wanted to ask about the CASL conference. On the website, I see a note to reach out to the secretary but haven’t heard anything about a call for authors. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong place.

On the school visit front, let me know if you have any questions related to budget, presentations, or whatever else!

Hi Val,

Wonderful, I’ve sent over an email! And I’m excited to learn more about the Fall Conference. It’s right after my birthday!

I’d love to come to Rumsey Hall!

See the info below on rates, discounts, and I have more detailed explanations of particular workshops/speaking topics here. The best dates for me would be between April 8th-24th.

My visit rate is $1600, which includes a signing, lunch with students, and up to four presentations (whether workshops or the general author talk to a larger audience). Each additional workshop or presentation is $300. For multiple days or if you can get more schools involved, I bring down the total price $200/per day or additional school. The only addition charge is that, if the school has the means, I’d kindly request a $100 transport fee to cover gas and tolls. And, of course, if you all want to buy any books, you can just let me know how many and I can supply them, offering a 20% discount as well as no sales tax.

Let me know if you have any questions at all about the visits or fees!

And yes, I’m sure Huda will be happy to help. Kudos on thinking of such awesome authors, and let me know if there’s anyone else I can connect you too!

As for March 22nd, I would definitely come, but my wife and I are taking a vacation (a rare occurrence for me) until the end of March starting this weekend. Can I rain check?

At Rumsey Hall: I'll reach out to my administrators to see if we can get you on to campus before the end of this year OR in the fall. Can you send me pricing and any other promotional materials I can share with them when you have a chance?

CASL is planning our Fall Conference scheduled for Oct. 21st at the Wyndham in Southbury, CT. We'll be sending out a call for presenters around March 15th. We'll also have an Authorpalooza at the conference and that info should go out around May 1st.

I will reach out to Huda. Thanks so much for getting in touch with her. How exciting that she'll do a video for a Rumsey book club! (Her email is quite funny!)

Finally, nErDcampCT organizers will be gathering at my house on Friday, March 22nd for a Dumpling Party (& we may do some debriefing of nErDcampCT). We will be making Chinese dumplings (bao jiaozi) and then eating them! We would love to have you join us. No pressure. I'm going to invite author Ismee Williams, too, since she has a house in Washington Depot which is about 10 minutes from me! If you're interested, let me know, and I'll send you the calendar invite with details. I have made vegetarian dumplings before, though it's been a while.

Best,
~Val

Hi Val,

It was fun to meet at the Nerdcamp!

Wanted to shoot you a note to follow up on getting your help in finding ways to connect with CT school librarians. It would be wonderful to do more work with librarians in your state. And, of course, if you know anyone planning out school visits for the Fall (including yourself), I’d love to work something out as I’m just a short ride away.

It seems some of your students are already loving Arab culture via Huda’s graphic novel. And, speaking of which, Huda got back to me! She said she’d be happy to do a video for your students, and asked me to give you her email, which is below. Be sure to reach out and let her know I sent you!

Let’s stay close and keep the conversation going :)

Hi Melissa,

I’d be honored to! Happy to deliver it with slides, with typed out, or just off the top of the noggin. I imagine the 3rd will be most conducive.

Let me know what you need from me!

Also, I imagine this would take place before 10:30, right? I have an online meeting between 10:30-12:30, with I hope is ok, but let me know if not :)

Good Morning George,

It looks like you have had some really amazing author related activities lately...not that I stalk you on social media...lol!

Our planning team would like to invite you to deliver the nerdtalk on March 2nd! You had indicated you would be interested--
I have a couple of ideas for talks that can fit this category, but the one that I’d love to give is about my experiences as an Arab American and person with alopecia, and how I can (and do) build empathy for those experiences with books! It’s a less formal version of my school visit presentation and I’m sure will resonate.

The Nerd Talk happens at the opening session which is brief--the entire opening is 30 minutes long and includes an intro and overview of the day followed by the Nerd Talk. Plan for about 10-12 minutes. It's more like a Lightning talk! ;)

Does that work for you??
Let me know what you think!!

Melissa
