We wanted you to be the first to know about an exciting school visit opportunity with Emma Otheguy as part of the launch of her new middle grade novel, Cousins in the Time of Magic (2/25/25).
Emma is partnering with Books Are Magic to offer free virtual author visits to schools that pre-order the book. Participating schools will receive an engaging virtual presentation from Emma, signed bookplates, and a bookmark for every student.
About the Book
History is alive with magic! Emma’s upcoming series, Cousins in the Time of Magic, takes kids on an action-packed journey through the U.S. Civil War and the historic Battle of Puebla in Mexico (the reason we celebrate Cinco de Mayo).
For years, Emma has heard from educators that they need big concepts and big adventures without the uphill reading slog. Cousins in the Time of Magic is just that–illustrated, action-packed, and full of the history that kids need to know, all under 200 pages. It includes detailed back matter for teachers and librarians, and it is available in English and Spanish. You can learn more about the book and see the cover here.
About the Presentation
Emma will introduce the series and characters, teach students about the real history of Cinco de Mayo, read aloud from the book, and take questions from the audience. Emma is a native bilingual and will happily offer the 45-minute virtual presentation in the language of your choice. Visits are available between January 2nd – February 14th, 2025.
