Subject: Re: [CASL-L] Security cameras in the libraryGood morning all,I would say no. Here is a recent opinion about something similar in classrooms. The library is my classroom.Your idea to place surveillance cameras in classrooms more broadly is very different and especially concerning.  Setting aside how intrusive teachers would find such cameras, the State Board of Labor Relations has ruled that placement of surveillance cameras in the workplace is a mandatory subject of negotiations.  See, e.g., City of Hartford, Decision No. 4719 (St. Bd. Lab. Rel., March 19, 2014).  Accordingly, it would be an unfair labor practice for you to place surveillance cameras in classrooms unless your school district and the teachers’ union agree through negotiations that you may do so (which will never happen).ÂThe full text of the article is here.Jamie

Subject: Re: [CASL-L] CASL-L Digest, Vol 11, Issue 19Re: Security cameras in the libraryYears ago the IT Director proposed putting a camera in the library. I was all for it! Unfortunately the proposition was vetoed because the library was deemed a "classroom" and classrooms are not permitted to have cameras. When I brought up how the gym also is a classroom but has a camera I was told it is also a public space, so cameras are required.Good luck getting them in your space! On Wed, Jan 15, 2025 at 7:17 AM <casl-l-request@mylist.net> wrote:Send CASL-L mailing list submissions to

Subject: Re: [CASL-L] Security cameras in the library_______________________________________________Hi All,We have 3 ceiling-mounted security cameras inside our library and 2 in the hallway directly outside our entrance/exit doors. One interior camera views our social learning area that also has access to our emergency exit door to the hallway. The other two view the majority of the main library space, one of which might be able to see a library assistant screen, though I speculate that even if that were zoomed in, it'd be incredibly difficult to see any student data up on PowerSchool or in Destiny at any given moment.I find them to be a useful tool when dealing with behavior management issues that require admin or security intervention. Makes it easy to grab a timestamped point of reference when documenting issues or working to identify people. Hope this helps!--Capstone Teacher, Trojan Tech TeamSimsbury High School
