Re: Security cameras in the library

Years ago the IT Director proposed putting a camera in the library. I was all for it! Unfortunately the proposition was vetoed because the library was deemed a "classroom" and classrooms are not permitted to have cameras. When I brought up how the gym also is a classroom but has a camera I was told it is also a public space, so cameras are required.

Good luck getting them in your space!

Dear CT Librarians,

Does anyone have suggestions for a book for a kindergarten aged student who is anxious about a parent going back to work after being home on an extended medical leave? She doesn't want to leave her mom in the morning due to this worry. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I was wondering who has security cameras in their libraries as a part of the security of the school. My principal seems to think that putting a camera in the space is a good idea. The biggest worry I have is where they’re talking about putting it, which would give the camera a view of our checkout screen.

But I’m wondering how others see this!

A colleague of mine in Wallingford who teaches a course to pre-service teachers at the University of Bridgeport would like to invite a school librarian to speak to her students as a guest lecturer. This would be an unpaid engagement. Here is the description from her:

Seeking school library media specialist to provide pre-service teachers with insight into selecting engaging and appropriate materials related to social studies instruction. The date and time are January 27 or February 3 from 5:15-6:15  and 6:25-7:25 at the University of Bridgeport's main campus.  Please let me know if you are interested and available. Hmm. That is an interesting one. I don't know much about this, but I don't like the idea of the checkout screen being seen. 

What is the rationale for having them? I understand security, but is there something that has been happening?

We delayed the installation of cameras as long as we could. Thankfully the ones installed do not see the checkout screen. There is one in the far corner giving a wide view of one side of the space and another that is closer to the door. No other classroom spaces have cameras. That said, there have been a few occasions where they have reviewed footage for who was in the space (or not) and to see about missing items.
